Mercy Nyabuto

In the market you learn to count fast. Here I learned to count carefully. The accountancy exams want both.

Mercy Nyabuto came to Nairobi from Kisii in 2017 to study for a diploma in accounting. She paid her fees by selling airtime and second-hand shoes at Toi Market, and in her second year the fees won and the diploma lost.

She heard about Rungwell from a cousin in the 48th cohort and joined the 50th in 2021. She works on document and receipt extraction, pulling dates, amounts and supplier names from scanned paperwork in English and Kiswahili, and became a senior labeller in 2023.

Since 2024 she has been studying part-time for her accountancy qualification, using the study leave Rungwell gives to anyone sitting a recognized exam. She has passed four papers out of six.

Her object is the desk calculator she bought for her first exam. “At Toi the calculator was my head. This one does not get tired.”
