The Nairobi centre today began a second, afternoon shift, running from 14:00 to 22:00, Monday to Saturday. One hundred and forty labellers from the centre’s fifth and sixth cohorts join the 236 already working mornings.
Labellers who finish after 21:00 travel home free on Rungwell minibuses to three stages agreed with the cohort representatives: Kawangware, Kibera (Olympic) and Kangemi. Afternoon-shift labellers also receive a meal allowance.
“The second shift means we can take on work from clients in North America during their morning,” said Joseph Githinji. “It also means 140 more people with a payslip. We asked the labellers what would make the late shift safe and workable, and the buses were the first answer.”
